Malcolm Liepke

Malcolm T. Liepke is an extraordinary phenomenon on the current art scene and is described as a contemporary master in the same category as Degas, Sargent, Whistler and Toulouse Lautrec. Liepke’s work is inspired by common humans in the casual and unposed moments of everyday lives. These include seamstresses and tailors, fighters and laborers, families and lone figures. Liepke’s brilliance lies in his superior painting ability, the simplification of elements and his refreshing selection of color. The dominance of celery, burgundy, black, apricot, mauve and ochre make his work distinct from all others, creating a contemporary but turn-of-the-century feel.

Raised in Minneapolis, Liepke studied briefly at the Art Center in Los Angeles. Basically self taught, he feels that his greatest education came from museums, studying the color, composition and technique of the great masters.

Liepke also has become a master in the field of Lithography. Each color is hand drawn on the same Viorin Lithographic presses as Toulouse Lautrec did a century ago. He currently has over a dozen images available with editions of 200 each. He has exhibited with such prestigious organizations as The National Academy of Design, The American Watercolor Society, The Pastel Society of America, Allied Artists, The National Arts Club and The Hudson Valley Arts Association. His work has appeared on the covers of Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Fortune and Sports Illustrated and he has won numerous gold and silver awards from the prestigious Society of Illustrators. Since 1979, Liepke has become a well-respected name in both the fine art and illustrative fields.
