Thomas McCoy

Thomas McCoy’s abstracts are of strong natural colors, interspersed with collages, and set within boundaries that create geometric divisions, reminiscent of a landscape under a big sky. Thomas McCoy mixes elements that present a solid strength that creates a mood of quiet depth and understated contemporary richness. These qualities are achieved through a subtle balance across the modular components of McCoy’s art - each off-setting and supporting - each interdependent, based on its tonality, intensity, shape and proportion.

The Montana countryside of his birth is evident in the art McCoy creates. He was born in 1971 in Helena, Montana and developed an early interest in the outdoors - specifically in fly fishing and camping, activities that meet nature at a level of respect and peace.

Thomas McCoy’s artistic flare started a few years after his interest in the outdoors, when he started building models - an activity he continues to pursue today. This was his first venture into working with his hands to create, and it seemed to come naturally. From this medium, he expanded into other forms of expression - primarily in the areas of mixed media and modular abstractions. Regardless of the form, he is now aware that exercising his creative vision has never been an option for him - it has always been something he needed to do.

His talent was recognized early and it ultimately led to acceptance in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program of the University of Colorado. Here his work grew in both dimension and style. Combining the artwork and the hand painted frame, his artwork becomes is a unified creation - echoing a consistent theme of duality - art and craft.
